Georges Seurat, this drawing is a 2-dimensional made with crayon on paper, the painter uses complementary color. the focal point is the dark spot on the left, but i don't understand what is the content of the painting, because it's hard to interpret what object those dark spot represent. the painter uses hatching a closely spaced parallel line to form a darker color and using cross hatching which is parallel lines intersect like a checkerboard to form lighter color. the painter uses Monochromatic, this drawing has a style of representational, the dark spot does form an object which resemble form in the nature world.
Gift of the architect
This drawing is made with charcoal on tracing paper on board by Kahn, 1963. Even though it is made only with charcoal it has a lot of value as we can see the brightness in the floor because of the light. It has geometrical shapes and organic shapes. The focal point in this drawing is in the two cylinder rooms. My eyes went directly there and then to the floor. Finally to the people. I could say that the artist wanted people pay more attention to the architectural in this drawing rather to the people in it. There are three cylinder rooms in the drawing, a shine floor and a lot of people. In my opinion this tell us that art can be even in the contractions.
A Plan to Escape From the World's Reversals
A Plan to Escape From the World's Reversals
Kerstin Kartscher (German, born 1966) |
This week we reviewed the essence of drawing. What always starts with a simple line on a canvas gradually concludes in an image of many wonders. The MoMa displayed numerous of fascinating drawings. The artwork that I've chosen to discuss is Kerstin Kartscher's "A Plan to Escape From the World's Reversals". This piece is a 2D, liquid media drawing illustrated with a felt tip and gel-ink pen on paper. The drawing indicates a landscape consisting of a body of water, a mountain, plants, a wild cow/ox and an abstract conceptual of the sun. I would say that 90% of the drawing is completed with lines in the form of hatching. At first, the title caught my attention. As for my subjective thought, I speculate that Kartscher is aiming to convey the desire of an escape from everyday life. A withdrawal from the uneasiness of getting through a normal day of labor into a stress relieving environment like the one shown in Kartscher's drawing.
The drawing is presented in several values from light to dark and an interesting pinch of a reddish hue and a highlighter yellow. The light area is visualized in the sea, darker values are shown in the mountain, mostly the sun. Angry and vertical lines are incorporated in the mountain, whereas
mellow and horizontal lines are represented in what appears to be the waves in the sea. I take the indications of lines and value in each individual element as an expression of dominance in the aspects of nature.

"Come Away from Her"
"Come Away from Her" by Kiki Smith is 2D painting. The artists used implied diagonal lines on a group of birds to show action and horizontal lines that show to emphasize either the sky or ground to show calmness. He also used Monochromatic color schemes which usually include a range of values and intensities. This drawing is implied texture and is used pattern by repeating lines , shapes and colors on birds and girl dress, as well as the sky and ground. It was used Asymmetrical balance. The focal point is the girl. It is the representational style drawing to show naturalistic. Kiki Smith used liquid media for watercolor. The drawing seems like based on fairy tales. The drawing shows that friendly birds fly off when the girls talk about something that they don't like. The birds in drawing suggest freedom. The girl represents innocence and the natural scene shows serenity. It also shows the freedom and the peaceful of childhood.
Woman With Umbrella
This is a 2D drawing made by Albert Marquet. The drawing is made of just lines and its very simple. Although simple, you can tell its an elegant lady holding an umbrella making it representational. The drawing is symmetrical if it was split in half. I can say the focal point is towards the lady's hat only because there are moving lines placed there implying some sort of design on the hat. There are organic and geometric shapes in the drawing. The lady is holding her hands together creating an implied triangle. I enjoy this drawing because even if it is just lines, I can tell it's a lady even without reading the title.

Dropped Cup of Coffee.
Dropped cup of coffee by Frank O'Hara. This drawing was drawn with crayon, pencil and wash on paper. The way the mugs are falling has sequence and implies motion. The artists shows step by the step the way the cups are falling and when it hits the ground there is a splash, The cups are drawn with a pencil and spilled coffee with a crayon. This drawing consists of organic and geometric shapes. the three mugs represents the rule of odds. The focal point of the drawing would be the coffee spilling everywhere. I think the artist was demonstrating humans love for coffee and the way we consume so much of it.
1983
This is an Untitled piece, made in 1983, that was given to the Guggenheim as an anonymous gift. The complexity of the way lines are used in this made this piece stand out from the rest. Many geometric shapes can be shown throughout the drawing as well as all types of lines ( horizontal, vertical and diagonal). Negative space would be the white background. It is hard to understand the content and context of this piece due a lack of a name or exact date made. However, i was able to make an assumption based on the year and where it was made. Unity is established well here with everything being somehow connected. With observing the unity amongst the lines and knowing that this was made in 1983 in New York, i felt that it was necessary to compare this to the map of the transit system. It may not actually look how its supposed to, but it does show some resemblance such as the overlaps between lines, and having long and short breaks before coming in contact with another line.
Untitled
This drawing is a fun one to look at. It is 2d. Its color cue is very basic, grey, black, and some light brown. It has many lines all through the drawing. I see two different ways to look at the position of the guy in the drawing. One way is his neck is turned to you and his back is curving. The second would be his face forwards looking at you, with his body drawn"incompletely". This is why i know the focal point of this drawing is the guy and determining what is exactly his standing position. He has a rhythm with all these different types of lines, which very much balance out. I really couldnt decide wether this drawing was abract or representational, only because i think its both. Very nice drawing. Unfortunately it is untitled. It was drawn by Kai Althoff in 1966.
Bend in the Road Through the Forest
This painting is2-D ,and the style is representational. The artist repetition green and bule colors to describe tree and sky which are organic shape. He high light some tree than background that seem like the moonlight shone on the tree.He also use implied texture to create detail about tree and sky. The focal point is women walk on the bended road in the forest. The whole painting give me feeling that many bended road always is difficult to walk than others, and few people want to go this way because it is lonely and hard.
The New Worshipper,l by Sandra Gamarra 2007
this is a pencil and oil drawing in 2D form. the focal point of this image is a young boy dressed in blue bowing below a figure in a framed painting. the way he is positioned on the floor shows a sense of direction. the color blue gives this painting a more deep, calm, and humble feeling in each corner there's edges of black squares.I think this image means before when a person worshiped something you could see the passion in their action. while now the passion is less noticeable or not shown the same way. he seems to be bowing and looking up to a (picture) which before people normally or mainly worshiped a figures and statues rather then a picture.
"The Bavarian Don Giovanni" a 2D form smooth texture drawing art by Paul Klee. The first time I saw this I was be attracted by those hue. It is colorful ( all three Primacy color, secondnary color and complementary yellow, red, blue, green, orange, and purple). Repetition triangles with different colors. This drawing all connect by lines. Because many colors, so the background display a bright light.
Football players
This painting by Henri Rousseau is obviously a 2-dimensional painting. It is drawn by oil on canvas. In this painting we see four guys wearing pajamas and one of them has a football by his hands. i also see lots of trees surrounding the four guys playing football. Also they look really happy and its like they havent played in a while so they really enjoying the moment. This painting has a very representational style because we have a very clear understanding of the painting. It has primary and secondary colors and even complementary colors. We see the vertical lines from the trees and also on their pajamas we see a pattern of colored stripes. This is of course an organic shaped painting because of the people. also the blue shy and the white clouds gives us a sense of calmness. And i think the focal point is the guy with the football.
The Hermitage at Pontoise
The Hermitage at Pontoise (Les côteaux de l'Hermitage, Pontoise), ca. 1867. Oil on canvas, 59 5/8 x 79 inches (151.4 x 200.6 cm). Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York,Thannhauser Collection, Gift, Justin K. Thannhauser 78.2514.67
This painting "The Hermitage at Pontoise" by Camille Pissarro has a form of 2-Dimensional. This painting is drawn by oil on canvas. When i look at this painting i see a nice bright warm calm Sunday morning in the neighborhood. The people are dressed very old-fashioned dresses indicating the time period was a long time ago, possibly when slavery was around. As i read the information about the painting, it tells me how its a view of a winding village path at the base of a cluster of houses in Pontoise, France, known as the Hermitage. It seems like the artist Camille Pissaro lived there. According to the time, 1867, it tells me how there were a lot culture involved and how their tradition mattered a lot to everybody were back then. This painting has a style of representational. This painting has a lot of trees that make vertical lines and the border of the hill and the sky has a horizontal line. The people make organic shapes and the houses make geometric shapes. There is an implied light coming from the right making shadows show. It has secondary colors. The painting has complementary colors. It implies and does actually have a smooth texture. The blue sky makes the day look bright and calm. This has a asymmetrical balance. The focal point would be the houses becasue of its big shape with bright color, making it stand out of green.

Nature
This drawing is made only with geometric shapes. It is untitled which makes it so much harder to figure out what the content of this artwork is, however, in my imagination, it looks like houses of an indigenous tribe. The one in the middle which is the focal point seems to belong to the head of the tribe because it is in the middle and its darker and different color from the other ones makes it more interesting and powerful. The right side of the drawing is green and represents the trees and the forest around. The brightest yellowish color right on top represents the sunlight and the little brown and yellow triangles on the left of the middle house is a ballon that they released during their gathering.
