Hugo Ovalle was born in the town of Cusco in 1966. He became involved in the arts at an early age and was schooled at a local art university, Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes (Superior School of Fine Arts). Ovalle's style is unique in that he works with a broad palette of colors to convey rich emotion and form through minimal complexity. He paints by breaking down the canvas into the essential components of the work, subtly abstracting the original image.
In several pieces, Ovalle paints human figures on scenic landscapes creating a juxtaposition of the nude human form and nature that accentuates a mood or theme he is trying to convey. He also frequently incorporates local costume, customs, and traditions into his work.
