The Crying Crocodile Tries to Catch the Sun

Karel Appel
The Crying Crocodile Tries to Catch the Sun, 1956
Guggenheim Collection, Venice

Line- This painting has horizontal an vertical lines. There are evident action lines that imply movement, such as the crocodile is eagerly swimming in rough waters, to catch up with the sun.
Shape- 2D (Flat oil canvas painting)
Color- Primary colors (red, blue, and yellow) are used the most. Secondary colors (orange and green) are used to illustrate the negative space (the water and clouds in the sky) that the audience isn't focused on.
Pattern- The lines used to color the crocodile are drawn fast. The lines around the sun also repeat

MODERN PAINTING WITH BOLT by Roy Lichtenstein

1967. Synthetic polymer paint and oil on canvas, 68 1/4 x 68 3/8" (173.2 x 173.5 cm). The Sidney and Harriet Janis Collection
http://www.moma.org/collection/browse_results.php?criteria=O%3ADE%3AI%3A5|G%3AHI%3AE%3A1&page_number=698&template_id=1&sort_order=2

The painting is put on canvas, which would make the surface smooth.  The bolt going through the middle of the painting diagonally implies direction and movement. There are many geometric and organic shapes. The colors are analogous, primary, tertiary, as well as triadic. We see a different value and intensity of the primary colors, as well as different hues of the same color. There is implied light where the white color is. We can also see a pattern of circles on the bottom of the painting. There is another pattern with the wave-like shape of the lines above the circles, and the white area on top of the painting that resembles a feathered wing.

Girl with a Mandolin

Girl with a Mandolin (Fanny Tellier)

Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881–1973)

Line - there is a lot of horizontal and vertical lines forming rectangular shapes.
Value - girl is lighter than the area around her, that's why we can see her easily.
Shape - there are a lot of geometric shapes, reducing the number of shapes seems to represent the girl.
Form - painting appear three-dimensional because of all these cubic shapes
Space - background seems to have more shapes than the girl, I think the girl is positive space.
Color - the same khaki color tone throughout the painting.
Texture - texture appear to be hard surface but in reality is probably smooth.

Art

William T. Williams

(1942 - )
Trane, 1969

This paint is 2D. It is created with primary, secondary and tertiary colors. Creating emotional and optical effects. It looks like it is going in one way but if stop and take a look again it goes in the appositive way. Full of geometrical shapes. it has diagonal lines. which means movement. In my interpretation I would say it shows the up and down stairs.

"Bather With a Beach Ball"

The name of this painting is "Bather With a Beach Ball" it was painted by Pablo Picasso in August 1932.

The first thing that I noticed about this painting was that it had both geometric and organic shapes. Also it has horizontal lines so the background appears to be calm. The painting also has value, at the top corner is a dark purple and the as you go to the bottom of the painting it turns into a light blue. The center of the painting appears to be 2D Im not sure if Picasso used chiaroscuro to make the image look 2D or 3D. As well as having lines the painting also has an edge. The painting has positive and negative space.

The artist uses horizontal lines that over the village, it implies peaceful. He also
uses lines to imply the direction of river. This art has lot of geometric shape, for example, the house, mountain, cloud......
The three of primary colors that red, blue, and yellow become most of hues
in this art. The artist also uses analogous and warm colors to accent the primary colors.
From whole art, we can feel very vigorous, beautiful, and peaceful spring of village.

Bird Bath sculpture from MoMa Museum.

This sculpture is called "Bird Bath" by Paula Hayes. A bird bath is where birds come to have a drink of water or a place to bathe.  The sculpture is  placed outside, which seems like a garden.  I love the way Paula used Monochromatic, variations of green.  The green leaves also creates the negative space.  The texture of the sculpture is smooth, it sort of resembles an ice sculpture.  It is 3D, has an organic shape and actual light.  I love the way the water looks like its flowing.  It seems so beautiful and peaceful.

A little about me

Hey everyone, my name is Steven and this is my first year at LagCC. I spent 8 years in the U.S. Army with 3 deployments under my belt. After I got out the military I decided to go to school and study to become a nurse. I am in this class because I love art! I am a big Mets, Giants, Knicks fan! I also got 2 bluenose pitbulls, Debo and Nyla.

THE COSTUME PARTY

* The Costume Party* * by George Segal * the form of this art work is 3D with organic shapes. the four pieces of sculpture is the positive space and the entire white room is the negative space. there's actual light coming from the ceiling of the room which is perfect for 3D art. The art work as a whole uses the  primary colors  and each sculpture is individually monochromatic.

World Breathing

Student Artist Nick, World Breathing, 2011, Passages Academy (Queens Museum)

Visual Elements -
Line - thick lines, gives the image a "primitive" feel.
Shape - basic shapes, leaning more toward geometric because of its basic-ness.
Light - not much implied light, but there's some highlighting on the two faces, so maybe this is supposed to be implied light?
Color - complimentary colors. At first glance, there are only large sections of bold colors (orange square, blue face, green rectangle, etc), but there is some highlighting and mixing of the shades within these color sections.
Texture - Not sure if there is any real implied texture (since I have no idea what that texture would be...) but the numerous lines give off more of a "rough" feel than a "smooth" one.

Woman Ironing by Picasso

WOMAN IRONING

Pablo Picasso, Woman Ironing, 1904.
Above is a piece called Woman Ironing by Pablo Picasso.
Many of you may have seen it before and can't help but feeling
saddened by the colors and her weakened posture.  Picasso
allows one to speak for the woman in this picture, because
she has no say, and we have the ability to translate.

Visual Elements:
  • Implied Movement  in the woman's posture
  • Implied Direction (Arms)
  • Heavy black outline around the woman
  • Organic Shapes (Body, Iron)
  • Positive Space (Woman)
  • Negative Space (Background)
  • Values of Grey
  • Chiaroscuro
  • Implied Light on the face, neck, arms and overall torso
  • Contrast from black to white
  •  A hint of rusty brown in the background and yellow in her skin
  • Rough Implied Texture in her arms and table

I chose this work of art because it looked familiar to me, only to discover the artist to be no other but Picasso himself. Woman Ironing vigorously expresses the melancholy undertone with powerful subtle characteristics. It's fascinating to see a piece with such a dull complexion appear so intense.

An Angler by Becker von, Adolf

This painting is drawn by Becker von, Adolf named An Angler drawn in the year 1890. The painting shows a guy around his 60's sitting in a large rock, fishing while smoking his pipe. The picture contemplates a calm chill mid-afternoon on a lonely experience. The sky is very still and has a  dusky blue color followed by a little cool grey color giving that slight of calm feeling. The painting does not have many bright colors. The painting has a variety of organic shapes like, the old guy, the tree.  Horizontal lines draw outs the back ground with the mountains and outline of the water followed by the fishing pole and rocks. This picture implies a smooth, steady texture and since its a painting, it can actually be a smooth texture.
