Formal Elements- Putting them into practice!

Awesome work today in identifying the formal elements of the artwork in Stairwell E.
Here are some pics. Line, shape, form, value, color, texture, pattern- I think everyone found a lot to observe and write about. Continue with the great observations for this week's blog post. Use the links on the right side bar to get you to the online museum collections. Write about what elements you see and where you see them. I'm looking forward to reading your posts.

Hello

Hi everyone, my name is Erika Yoder, I'm 19, and this is my second year at Laguardia. My major is Liberal Arts. Although I don't think I'm the best at it, I love art, and was actually considering becoming an animator/cartoonist not too long ago. My dad is an artist, and paints Hex Signs, a little known art form popular in traditional Pennsylvania German culture. I also know how to paint Hex Signs and have sold a few pieces through his art gallery. My main passion when it comes to art, however, is comic and cartoon art. I'm an avid DC comics fan, and one day wish to draw something as beautiful as the picture you see to the left, which is of Starfire, one of my favorite DC comics characters. Some artists I admire are Andy Warhol, Butch Hartman, Walt Disney, and Bruce Timm. In spite of my interest in art, this is my first art class in college, and I am definitely looking forward to it, since I don't know a whole lot about the technical side of art - styles, historical context, etc - aside from the styles aforementioned. I hope this class has some information to offer about American comics, since I believe they are an important part of American culture, and would likely be the class I sit up straightest in!

Hey everyone!

My name is Darlin. I'm 20 years old and Ecuadorian. This is my second year in LAGCC studying Liberal arts: Math and Science. This is my first art class in here and I hope to take a lot out of this class. I used to do a little drawing myself, until I got distracted from it. I admire art, all types of art, anything that catches my eye and has a deeper meaning to it.

Three random facts about me is that I'm the only girl with four brothers and I like to smile and be silly (in proper occasions of course!)

Hey Class,
My name is Erika Alexandria, I'm a 22 year old Guyanese and Hungarian, visually impaired girl who's major is Liberal Arts & Social Sciences. I reside on the Upper East Side of NYC. I chose to be part of this Intro to Art class because I am very inspired by certain pieces of work and really enjoy looking at abstract art as well as cultural art from non-American artists. I am very intrigued by art that doesn't convey a message right away, I like to be able to revisit an artists' collection and come to a new conclusion every time. An example of the kind of art I'm into include these vibrant pieces of work:

Angel C.

Hello strangers, I'm Angel. I'm 18 years old. I reside in Queens, New York and I am currently attending LaGuardia Community College. In my spare time, I devote my attention to sketching, poetry, books, clothing, bikes and even a bit of cooking.

Art plays such a major role in our lives, we breathe it. Our urban society is encrusted in endless forms and interpretations of art. Truth is, one embodies art in the way one functions, we are surrounded by aesthetics & as hard as we try to avoid it, we can't. "The world is but a canvas for our imaginations." I am thrilled to dedicate every brain cell of my mind into this course. Not only do I hope to learn from my instructor but from my peers as well, because art carries on more than one voice. In the future, I plan to enroll in a four year college, to                                                                 study Fine Arts.

Above is a classic portrait of the Campbell's Soup Can by American Pop Artist, Andy Warhol (1962) What I admire about this ageless piece is the simplicity and modernity that it expresses about pop art. This image became undeniably popular in the New York art scene, because of the lack of charisma portrayed, leaving the audience to decide.

This Guy .

What's up everyone, my name is Ryan Morales. I'm 18 years old and this is my first semester at LaGuardia. I reside in South Jamaica Queens, where I have lived all of my life. I don't travel, nor have I ever been on an airplane. My nationality is Puerto Rican, Native American and African American, but don't expect me to speak any other language than english! My passion is music, not only listening to it but playing it as well. I'm currently the keyboardist for a band, hoping to get our name up soon. Music is my side project, but my main goal has changed over the years. At first Architecture amazed me, but my sight became locked onto Electrical engineering. I used to love drawing many designs for buildings that I created inside my head, but after sometime, Electrical Engineering had much more of an impact on me. Maybe I'll change my mind and develop the love for architecture that i once had. One random weird fact about me is that I hate roller coasters, but love skydiving, ironic?

hey whats upp

hey whats up my name is Michael Nieto. im 20 years old and im from Colombia. this is my 2nd year at lagcc. i like to skate, go out with friends, and just have fun. im not really into art but after this semester im hoping to learn a lot more about it and hopefully start liking it as well.

Sueshani

Hi, my name is Sueshani (Sue-Sha-Nee) and this is my last semester at LaGuardia. My major is Occupational Therapy. Im Jamaican and Indian. I love to dance and hang out with friends.

pingping. ding

my name is pingping. ding . I'm from china. This is my second semester at LAGCC. I chose this class because my major--(-by the way , my major is electrical engineering.)  Although I don't know anything about ART, I  love to learn and enjoy it... In the end, I hope everyone have a good time in this semester.

Rookie at Lagcc

Hi there, my name is Luis Hernandez and I am 17 soon to be 18 years old, currently living and roaming the streets of Jackson Heights. I am from Colombia but people say I look White and not Hispanic. I like to play handball, football and i hate soccer even tho I'm Colombian. My major is Civil Engineering and I plan not to change that, because that is what I'm setting my mind to and what I want, although Engineering is not a simple career but very difficult and interesting. I am Currently a freshman at LaGuardia Community College and looking forward to increase the knowledge I have to get my self where I want to be. I don't hate art nor do I like it for the fact that I cannot draw any good. However it is interesting to set my mind as a artist. I'm also setting my mind to my Red Nose Pit-bull named Nala and she's only 4 months soon to be 5 months. I hate the fact that people judge them as a bad dog just because of the cruel stories they heard but they don't know that its the way you raise them that turns them into who they are. If you raise them bad, as in abusing them, torturing them, best believe your going to have a vicious dog and if you raise them right with just simple love and care, your going to see the best positive outcome of the dog. My dog is really friendly and actually too friendly to everybody even dogs.

LEEN

hi all, i'm Aileen Mahmoodi :) this is the wrong assignment to give someone like me because i can talk about myself for too long. i'll try my best to keep it simple.
i'm 20 turning 21 the day after halloween... i accept all gifts, gift cards, money orders, checks...etc.
I'm half filipina, half iranian, ive been told i look latin, but only speak english!!! ...otherwise id be working at the UN ((-_- thanks mom and dad!)) however, im inked up now, so that's absolutely out of the question. i love the art on my body and i cant wait until its finished!
i like old school hip hop like NWA type stuff up until the dipset era... everything after that not so much... i rather listen to the backstreet boys and mandy moore over lil waynes new stuff ANYeffingDAY.
I'm madly in love with nate robinson... if you dont know who that is, google him.
I LOVE BASKETBALL. i will beat you... no doubt in my mind about it! i enjoy watching most sports; football (nfl and ncaa), basketball (nba and ncaa ...not womens ball though), hockey, baseball, and i guess soccer.
I'm a proud owner of an xbox360 and play madden13, 2k13, and mw3 on it... but im HORRIBLE at all 3.

I went to Fiorello H. LaGuardia HS of Music and Art and Performing Arts.  Graduating from there leave most with an obnoxious amount of school pride... i guess i'm no different.  while there i took an art history class my senior year, then took another art history class at CCNY... and i have to say, the second time around made appreciate the history of art a little more. Its not all boring --SEE...

garden of earthly delights (c. 1480-1505)
hieronymus bosch
i dont know the name of this one... but he's throwing up the  west side  hand sign
it's by Sandro Botticelli

I've always been pretty passionate about art. I love museums, galleries, and even things like frame shops. In high school my favorite class was painting (i paint but i cant stand drawing.  oil paint is my preference... that or aerosol....
this is something i painted in hs...

yeah, i did graffiti.  i wasnt that good, but i got my spots that got me known enough for me to digg it. The culture is really what sucked me in. i've even met the infamous JA before. i support graffiti as art100% and if anyone has anything to say about it, i'd love to hear it.

i'm a secondary education major and i hope to one day teach HS english and coach the basketball team for that school.  while thats in progress, i'm hostessing at a place on 75th and Lexington if anyone wants some good burgers, oysters and martinis.

Hello everyone,

My name is Antonio and this is my last year at LaGuardia. My major is Criminal Justice and I have a passion for photography and motorcycles. I love traveling and seeing new places.                                                                                                                                 -Rachel

Hi! My name is Aline and this is my first semester at LaGuardia. I am Brazilian and I came to the US 6 years ago. For now I intend to graduate in Mechanical Engineering but I might change my major. I love adventures, dancing, being outdoors. Art sometimes seem to be about someone trying to send  a message and it is very interesting to me to try to get into the artist's mind and figure out what were the reasons that made him make a specific piece of art.

Welcome to Intro to Art 110.1301!
This will be the blog for our class, where we can continue discussions with each other and apply in-class learning to the world around us.
Each week we'll pick an idea or question and post responses to it using images and writing.
Posts are due by midnight on Thursdays. I look at this blog daily, and we'll also look at it during class.
